A disembodied voice blares into the emptiness; "A new life awaits you in the off-world colonies" - a floating billboard overhead the suburban streetscapes of Brisbane, Australia.
I am a programmer. Mostly I program in Java, and Python, but also a bit other languages like C, Objective-C, Ruby, /bin/sh and so on. Nowadays I spend a fair amount of time on REST integration and asynchronous messaging for our company's software products. At autonomous.org there are links to the software I've made which you can download. My technical blog is called "Let X=X" and it's at http://crazymcphee.net/x/
I am a doing a PhD in Classics and Ancient History: I have a Master of Arts in Ancient History from University of Queensland, and I'm now a PhD student at the same institution. My research topic is Livy and 1st century B.C. Latin historiographical representation of landscape in warfare. My other research interests include: representations of the city in Latin poetry and prose; Roman conceptions of boundaries, delineations and frontiers; and how the Romans embodied both physical and symbolic control of that space. I have a blog dedicated to Classics: inlustre monumentum est ... I've also got some software projects in the Digital Humanites and Digital Classics area. Please see autonomous.org for details.
I am a hobbyist photographer. You can see photos I take on Flickr. I also keep a photo blog - My New Life In The Off-world Colonies which documents my life in Brisbane since I moved here from Sydney in 2005.
I'm married to the brilliant and beautiful Dr. Lisa Bode, since 1998.
